Market Food: It's An Actual Thing!

There are many things I love about Durban.

One of these things is that fact that Durban is always abuzz, any time of the year.

If it's not beach festivals (some of which are held in Winter mind you), there are exhibitions and international shows, such as the MTV Africa Music Awards.

Another type of event that I love to attend in Durban is the markets spread across our beautiful shores.

I've almost turned into a 'market maniac' where I've made note of every market in Durban and follow their every post and tweet to find out when they're showcasing and what's on offer.

It's a great concept that Durbanites are all excited about, and for good reason.

Apart from the great wares you can get your hands on, there's also the amazing food!

Now, before you close this web page because you think I'm speaking utter bull-crap, please wait!

This weekend is one of those times when just about all the markets will be running.

I've have been to a number of these markets since the beginning of the year, and I have to say that their food game is on point!

For fear of leaving people out, I will name one or two stalls from each market that will be on this weekend.

Litchi Orchard: Friday from 5pm

I have previously written about them. You can view that post here.

Food stands to look out for are Cafe' Strawberry with their signature Strawberries and Cream, as well as a biltong stand whose name I have completely forgotten. My husband Ashley says they make the best biltong and salami in the world. There's also the Delish Sisters who have a restaurant at Litchi Orchard. They are amazing people with just as amazing food.

Market at the Square: Friday from 5:30pm

This is one of the markets I have not been to. I am hoping I get a chance to go there today.

However there are a few spots that I can recommend you grab a treat to eat. Again Cafe' Strawberry have been regulars at the Square. The lovely Delish sisters will be offering their awesome food and are famous for their slow roasted lamb naan wraps. If you have a sweet tooth, look out for Daniela's Deliciously Decadent and So Whipped, both serving macaroons and cupcakes, respectively.

Wonder Market: Sunday from 9am

The Wonder Market has really grown over the last year.

I have had the joy of attending a few months ago. Read my review here. This place excites me simply because there are just so many food options. One of the stalls Ponto Paella makes a mean seafood paella. This according to Ashley, as my daughter Danielle and I are allergic to shellfish, so we did not try it. There's Zak & Tonic who do everything from pulled pork and brisket, to steak rolls and steak salad. For sweet treats, head over to Wicked Donuts. Read my review on them here. Local favourite So Whipped are another stall to look out for if you're in need of a cupcake fix.

Golden Hours Family Market: Sunday from 10am.

It disappoints me to say that I have not been to this market.

Every time I have planned to attend, something has come up. So unfortunately I am not sure about the exact food stalls. However, a lovely lady did a review on a local restaurant reviews Facebook page. She mentioned that there was a food court with various vendors and that they had everything from pancakes filled with Nutella to carrot muffins. Other treats included lemon meringue tarts and chocolate peanut butter and raisin cupcakes. I think just the treats are reason enough to visit and see what else they have to offer in terms of food. Here's hoping I get a chance to go through on Sunday and sample their eats.

So there you have it. You can go to 2 markets on Friday, have a break on Saturday and then attend another 2 on Sunday. It should be a great weekend of food, shopping and live music.

Happy Munching!
